Trenchless Pipe Rehabilitation Design & Engineering

From early planning through to installation.

Semtex Trenchless Solutions provides specialist design, engineering and technical support for trenchless pipe rehabilitation projects across New Zealand. Every pipeline and project presents different challenges. We consider pipe condition, environmental and site factors, access, operating requirements, constructability, risk and required performance to develop practical, well-planned rehabilitation solutions for our clients. Our experience spans gravity pipelines, pressure pipework, culverts, manholes and industrial assets, with specialist support available for commercial, civil infrastructure, industrial, marine and offshore projects.

From pipe assessment to trenchless rehabilitation.

From initial pipe inspection and condition assessment through to rehabilitation design, project planning and installation, Semtex Trenchless Solutions develops practical trenchless solutions tailored to each pipeline and project.

Our
Approach

The right pipe rehabilitation solution starts with understanding the asset.

Effective trenchless pipe rehabilitation starts well before installation. Understanding why a pipeline has deteriorated, how it operates, and the conditions surrounding it allows the rehabilitation method to be selected and designed around the actual asset.

Our team combines inspection information, engineering principles, manufacturer requirements and practical field experience to develop solutions that balance condition, risk, cost, disruption, constructability and required service life.

Where appropriate, options can include cleaning, localised repairs, CIPP pipe lining, pressure pipe relining, SIPP pipe lining, manhole rehabilitation, or conventional excavation and replacement. This means the project can be approached around what the asset actually requires rather than starting with a predetermined rehabilitation

Specialist Advice

Expert advice makes a difference

Early specialist input can make a significant difference to how a pipe rehabilitation project is planned and delivered.

As specialists in trenchless rehabilitation, Semtex Trenchless Solutions brings practical field knowledge into the planning and design process. We review the asset, investigate available rehabilitation methods, identify constructability and access requirements, consider project risks and help establish a clear pathway through to installation.

Where specialist engineering or proprietary system design is required, we can also coordinate with qualified engineers, liner manufacturers and material suppliers to support the project-specific design and technical verification.

Trenchless Rehabilitation Consultancy

Semtex Trenchless Solutions provides practical trenchless rehabilitation consultancy for residential developments, commercial facilities, industrial sites, councils, infrastructure owners, principal contractors and consulting engineers.

Support can begin during the early stages of a project and include feasibility assessments, review of CCTV footage and asset information, rehabilitation option development, constructability and access assessments, equipment and product selection, installation methodology, bypass and isolation planning, temporary works, programme and budget considerations, and project risk planning.

A rehabilitation solution needs to work on paper and be practical to install.

We consider pipe preparation, site access, liner handling, equipment footprint, available working hours, flow control, connections, bends, shutdown requirements, curing, quality verification and contingency planning before work begins.

Where appropriate, we compare cleaning, localised repair, CIPP, pressure lining, SIPP, manhole rehabilitation and excavation or replacement. The objective is to identify a solution that balances condition, risk, cost, disruption and required service life.

Specialist manufacturer and engineering input can be coordinated where proprietary design or additional technical verification is required.

Pipe Condition Assessment

A detailed pipe condition assessment helps establish what is happening inside an asset and what level of intervention may be required.

Semtex Trenchless Solutions assesses gravity pipelines, pressure pipework, culverts, manholes and selected industrial assets. Inspection findings are considered alongside asset information and operating requirements to understand the nature, severity and potential consequences of deterioration.

Assessment can consider CCTV and manhole inspection data, pipe material, diameter, shape and age, depth and alignment, groundwater, flow conditions, previous failures or repairs, soil and traffic loading, pressure, temperature, chemical exposure and abrasion.

Defects may include cracking, fractures, deformation, collapse, joint displacement, leakage, corrosion, erosion, wall loss, infiltration and exfiltration, roots, deposits, obstructions, defective connections and failed previous rehabilitation.

Importantly, both structural and service condition are considered. A pipeline can remain structurally stable while still requiring intervention because of leakage, infiltration, corrosion, obstruction or hydraulic performance.

For gravity wastewater and stormwater assets, defect coding can be completed in accordance with the New Zealand Gravity Pipe Inspection Manual, 4th Edition, where required by the project.

Trenchless Rehabilitation Design

Once the asset and project requirements are understood, Semtex Trenchless Solutions can support the design and specification of trenchless rehabilitation systems for gravity, pressure, industrial and offshore pipeline assets.

The design process establishes the rehabilitation method, materials, liner thickness where applicable, installation approach, curing requirements, terminations and quality controls required for the individual asset.

What goes into rehabilitation design?

Project-specific design inputs can include pipe:

  • diameter, shape, material and length

  • condition and remaining capacity

  • depth, soil conditions and live loading

  • groundwater and external hydrostatic pressure

  • ovality and deformation

  • operating and surge pressure

  • temperature and chemical exposure

  • abrasion and flow requirements

  • connections, bends and fittings

  • access and installation constraints

  • required design life and safety factors

CIPP pipe lining design

Structural CIPP design may consider fully deteriorated or partially deteriorated host-pipe conditions, buckling resistance, external pressure, soil modulus, ovality, flexural properties, long-term reduction factors, liner stiffness and minimum wall thickness.

Pressure pipe design

Pressure rehabilitation design considers operating pressure, surge, vacuum, fatigue, temperature, liner-host interaction, end restraints, bends, fittings, connections and chemical compatibility.

SIPP & spray lining design

Spray-lining design may consider required dry-film thickness, corrosion protection, adhesion, surface profile, number of coats, chemical exposure, cure conditions and whether the system is protective, semi-structural or structural.

Technical Support

Technical support from planning through to project closeout

Semtex Trenchless Solutions provides technical support throughout investigation, planning, design, installation, commissioning and project closeout.

Before installation, this can include reviewing CCTV information, confirming dimensions and access, selecting rehabilitation systems and equipment, reviewing liner or coating design, planning cleaning and robotic preparation, and developing bypass, isolation, dewatering, installation and quality requirements.

During installation, support can include equipment setup, technical supervision, liner handling, process control, monitoring pressure, temperature and curing, material and coating controls, robotic cutting and lateral reinstatement, troubleshooting and quality hold-point verification.

Following rehabilitation, work can include post-installation CCTV, final inspection, lateral reopening, tophat and end-seal completion, review of cure and installation data, remedial planning where required, handover documentation and recommendations for future monitoring and maintenance.

Designed, installed and documented with confidence

Quality control is considered throughout the rehabilitation process rather than only at completion.

Depending on the project, technical documentation may include inspection reports, methodologies, design information, liner and resin batch records, cure logs, pressure and temperature records, coating thickness readings, photographs, quality checklists, as-built information, product data and warranty records.

Design assumptions, product properties and site information are reviewed before installation, with changing field conditions managed through the project quality process.
